Blue silk brocade bodice lined with ecru coloured linen. Brocade in in metallic threads and blue silk, pleated peplum frill at waist, peplum padded centre back. Holes either side of front for lacing. The metallic thread of the bodice makes it surprisingly heavy.

This bodice was made for a statue of The Virgin Mary. These garments for statues were known as Image Robes and was a common practice in Roman Catholic churches in France until the French Revolution (1789-1799). The practice involved altering fashionable clothing to fit the wooden statues of Mary, creating garment with impossible proportions.
