St Austell, Cornwall

Two-piece wedding dress in blue and black striped silk trimmed with black velvet. Black velvet stand collar, false lapels, waist hem, and ribbon at cuffs and skirt bottom. Centre-front fastening with hooks and eyes. Skirt centre-back placket fastened with hooks and eyes.
After synthetic dyes became widely available, from 1856, many women chose bright wedding dresses as a change from the everyday clothing. This also made a statement that the bride was transitioning into a grown woman. In the costume collection here, there are green, blue and red wedding dresses from the later Victorian era.
